Modular building is considered as the highest prefabricated rate and becomes a major trend inthe field of building industrialization. Modular concrete building is gaining lots of attention due to theexcellent properties on fire resistance, anti-corrosion, thermal and sound, economy and living comfort. The development of modular concrete building at home and abroad is introduced from four aspects, including concrete modular unit type, inter-module connection type and mechanical behaviors, lateralload resisting system. It is found that prefabricated modules can be classified into three structural systemsdepending on load transferring mechanism: wall supported module, column supported module and non-load bearing module. There are also three inter-module connections: wet connection on-site, boltedconnection and pre-stressed reinforcement connection. Wet connection would provide good integrity andbe friendly to finish, while too much work has to be done on site and the rate of construction is slow.Bolted connection has a less on-site work and rapid construction, while the integrity is worse than wetconnection. There are four main lateral load resisting systems: module-core system, module-podiumsystem, infilled frame system and stacked box structural system. High-rise building always applies thefirst three systems while multistory buildings can apply the last system. Although, there are severalmodular concrete buildings in practice, limited research can be found on their mechanical behavior. Therelated research far lags behind the engineering practice. In addition, concrete module has a higherweight resulting in handling and transportation issues and slow erection process due to wet connection, allthe defects block the development of modular concrete building.
